Last weekend, my friends Nich and Tricia were in town, and I spent the day with their kiddos Nomi and Toshi. I’ve known these guys since they were just newborns, and now they’re so big, and are such goofballs. Every time they’re in town, we spend I strap on the ‘cool babysitter’ hat, and we go out and play in the water, go on long walks to the park, pick flowers, and watercolor (ok, and watching My Little Pony).
This time around, I wanted to do a little something that I am super passionate about enticing kids to love doing– cooking. Something I used to do back when I lived in Seattle was to cook with kids through an organization called Apple Corps. I taught children in low-income communities how to cook and also taught them the values of eating nutritiously. Cooking with children easily became one of my greatest joys. Not only do they grow to respect food, but the time and energy it takes to prepare it. I’ve noticed when you cook with kids and get them involved in meal prep, they’re way more excited about eating what they make. This allows picky eater to become more malleable to the foods around them. I love teaching them about the different measurements, as well as learning to keep their meals colorful and fresh.
Here, we made a watermelon, pineapple, blueberry, lemonade, and coconut smoothie with our Cyclone blender from BLACK + DECKER. That was way too long to say, so I’m going to call it a “Summertime Smoothie.” Enjoy!
Oh, and don’t forget to leave some watermelon out for them to munch on. They’ll ask for it.
“Cover your ears, it’s loud.”
- 1 1/2 cup watermelon, chopped
- 1 cup pineapple, chopped
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1/2 cup coconut water
- 1/2 cup raspberry (natural flavored) lemonade
- Have kids help throw ingredients in a blender.
- Blend until smooth.
- Poor in kid friendly cups.
- Drink up!
- *This smoothie would be delicious as a cocktail too. ADULTS ONLY.
